August 2009

USAF's first UAS Academic Symposium: Aug 4 - 6
The United States Air Force will host the USAF's first UAS academic symposium Building Academic Opportunities for the Future of UAS, August 4-6 at the University of North Dakota. This event will focus on unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and their role in shaping the future of Air Force aviation. Members of the Air Force, colleges, and universities will have an opportunity to discuss the Air Force's UAS vision.

Recently, the Air Force ushered in a new era in the application of airpower with the release of its first UAS Flight Plan. This visionary document prescribes how the Service intends to institutionalize UAS throughout the Air Force to include implications for doctrine, organization, training, materiel, leadership, education, personnel, facilities, and policy.

The Air Force recognizes the important role our Nations academic centers have in developing future aerospace leaders, and the innovations enjoyed as a result of their research efforts. The Air Force is inviting academic centers to learn about their vision for UAS and explore teaming and research opportunities in various disciplines that will enable them to achieve our goals.

This is an exciting time to chart a new course in aviation, much like the early airpower pioneers of the 20th Century.
