Gabriel Chapter Sponsors Winning Event for Our Wounded Warriors
The Washington Capitals lost the hockey game on 13 January 2008, but 23 Wounded Warrior participants and family members from Walter Reed Army Medical Center left happy anyway. On that Sunday early in 2008, our Gabriel Chapter AFA sponsored its third activity for Wounded Warrior team members and their families. Gabriel Chapter Executive Committee member Ken Spencer and his colleague Jared Wurster collaborated with the Walter Reed AMC staff and the Washington Capitals marketing team for transportation and discount tickets for our honored guests. The Walter Reed team arranged the bus transportation, scheduled the attendees, and added excellent coordination and assistance. The Gabriel Chapter purchased discounted game tickets through the Caps staff for all the Wounded Warrior attendees and their guests. They and their guests also were provided food and soft drinks throughout the game. The Wounded Warriors expressed deep satisfaction and for the hockey outing and for Gabriel Chapter’s visible support.

Chantilly Academy Air Force JROTC Dining Out and Awards Ceremony
On 8 February, 2008 at the Fair Lakes Hyatt Hotel, the 6th Annual Dining Out for AFJROTC unit VA-20012 was one filled with high spirits, hope for the future, and cheerful remembrance. Over 60 cadets from the AFJROTC program’s three flights attended the Dining Out and Awards Ceremony along with over 100 family and friends. Brigadier General Ronald D. Yaggi, USAF, Retired presented each cadet with ribbons and other awards earned over the first semester of the 2007-2008 school year. He also delivered a heart-felt speech as the keynote speaker.
As the cadets, family, and guests were seated they were welcomed by Cadet Captain Joseph Abernathy. The Colors were presented by the AFJROTC color guard and the national anthem played. After the introduction of the honored guests, the room fell silent as the Prisoner of War/ Missing in Action table was set. This notable event is a time for active duty and retired service members and all Americans to remember those service men and women who did not return home. The atmosphere eventually lightened as toasts were made and dinner served. One of the highlights of the evening was when the military dining out tradition of the "Grog Bowl" was introduced, in which both cadets and leaders alike had the "privilege" to participate. As the night came to a close, cadets reflected on fond memories as they viewed a slide show covering the entire first semester. The evening was one that first year and returning cadets will be sure to remember for a long time to come. |
